Activity Level:

Moderate

This beautifully paced journey through Slovenia and Croatia blends historic cities, coastal scenery, and natural wonders with a balance of guided touring and leisure time. While there are opportunities to relax and explore at your own pace, travelers should be comfortable with regular walking, uneven terrain, and several full sightseeing days. This itinerary is best suited for those who enjoy immersive cultural exploration and can manage a moderate level of physical activity.

Walking and Standing

This tour includes guided walking tours, as well as time exploring villages, historic centers, and natural sites. Walking distances are generally moderate, often ranging from one to three miles per day, with breaks included. Travelers should be comfortable standing and walking for one to three hours at a time. At Plitvice Lakes National Park, expect a more active day. The visit includes approximately two hours of walking over uneven terrain and wooden boardwalks, with a route of about 1.8 miles. This experience also involves climbing more than 100 steps and walking without the assistance of handrails in certain areas. Conditions within the park may vary depending on weather, water levels, and crowd conditions.

Terrain and Physical Considerations

Terrain throughout the tour varies and includes cobblestone streets, stone walkways, wooden boardwalks, steps, and uneven natural surfaces, and areas with steps and inclines. Many historic areas are pedestrian-only and require walking to access key sites. The historic center of Ljubljana is closed to motor traffic. Dubrovnik’s Old Town is entirely pedestrianized, requiring walking to explore its streets and landmarks. Good balance and mobility are important for safely enjoying these environments.

Transportation and Travel Days

This itinerary includes several overland travel days by motorcoach as we move between Slovenia and Croatia with scenic and cultural stops along the way. Due to local regulations, motorcoaches cannot access many historic city centers. This may require walking between drop-off and pick-up points, which are not always in the same location.

Climate and Environmental Factors

Along Croatia’s Adriatic coast, expect warm, sunny weather with dry conditions, particularly in early September. Inland areas and Slovenia tend to be slightly cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings. Sun exposure can be strong, particularly in coastal areas and during activities.
