Luxury Greenland expedition for women 45+: Arctic discovery, culture, and connection

There are places you’ve wanted to see for years. And then there’s Greenland, a place that makes you wonder what else you’ve been missing. Towering icebergs. Fjords that seem to go on forever. Small, remote communities where daily life follows a very different rhythm. Imagine being there, taking it all in beside women who are just as thrilled as you are that they finally said yes.

Join Sisterhood Travels for a luxury expedition cruise through Greenland and the High Arctic, where the wilderness of Svalbard sets the stage for an extraordinary journey to Greenland’s eastern coast. Here, immense mountains and drifting ice frame our exploration of Scoresby Sound, while a visit to Ittoqqortoormiit offers an opportunity to experience the Arctic as a place people call home.

This is travel with room for the unexpected. A call to the deck when a whale surfaces. A Zodiac outing that leaves you searching for words. The possibility of seeing a polar bear in the wild. With an experienced expedition team guiding the way, our days respond to the ice, weather, and opportunities around us. That sense of discovery is part of what makes this journey so special.

And after time out exploring, we’ll return to the comforts of our luxury Atlas Ocean Voyages ship, ready to warm up, settle in, and compare the moments we can’t stop talking about. Come meet a new bestie, share plenty of laughter, and discover how much more meaningful an extraordinary place can become when you experience it together.

1 Welcome to Oslo2027-08-22

Welcome to Oslo, the vibrant capital of Norway and the starting point of our High Arctic luxury expedition adventure. After arriving from your overnight flights, these two days are yours to rest, relax, and ease into the journey ahead.

Take time to recover from travel, connect with your new Sisters, and explore Oslo at your own pace. This fascinating city blends modern Scandinavian design with rich Nordic history, and the revitalized Oslo harbor district is a wonderful place to begin. Stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a café overlooking the Oslofjord, or browse the city’s shops and galleries. You may also wish to visit one of Oslo’s renowned museums, such as the Nobel Peace Center, which celebrates the legacy of the Nobel Peace Prize, or simply wander the city’s lively streets and parks.

These relaxed days offer the perfect opportunity to settle in before our Arctic expedition begins.

Breakfast (August 23)

2 Longyearbyen to Svalbard2027-08-24

This morning we’ll take a charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world with a permanent population and the gateway to the High Arctic.

Set in a dramatic valley along the shores of Adventfjord, Longyearbyen is surrounded by rugged mountains, glaciers, and sweeping Arctic wilderness. Before boarding our expedition ship, we’ll have time to explore this fascinating frontier town. Wander the small-town center, browse local shops for any last-minute Arctic essentials, or visit the Svalbard Museum, which offers a fascinating introduction to the history, wildlife, and exploration of the region.

Later this afternoon we’ll make our way to the harbor to board our luxury polar expedition ship. After settling into our cabins and attending the ship’s welcome briefing, we’ll set sail at 6:00 PM, leaving civilization behind as we begin our unforgettable High Arctic expedition through the Svalbard archipelago.

3 Exploring Svalbard2027-08-25

Over the next three days, we’ll venture deep into the remote wilderness of the Svalbard archipelago, one of the most extraordinary regions of the High Arctic. This is true expedition travel, where each day unfolds according to wildlife sightings, sea ice conditions, and the expert guidance of our Captain and expedition leaders.

Our route is intentionally flexible, allowing us to follow the best opportunities for exploration. The Captain will skillfully navigate through ice floes, glaciers, and Arctic waterways, working closely with the expedition team to determine the most rewarding landing sites and wildlife viewing areas.

During these days of discovery, we’ll head out on Zodiac excursions and guided shore landings, giving us the chance to explore remote Arctic landscapes up close. The islands of Svalbard are rich in wildlife, and we’ll keep watch for reindeer, Arctic foxes, puffins, and Arctic terns, along with whales that occasionally surface in the surrounding waters.

Of course, one of the greatest thrills of the Arctic is the possibility of spotting the region’s most iconic resident — the polar bear. Our expert naturalists and onboard photographer will help us scan the ice and shoreline for wildlife and capture the incredible scenery along the way.

4 Greenland Sea Scenic Navigation2027-08-28

Today we sail across the vast Greenland Sea, where endless Arctic horizons and open waters create ideal conditions for whale watching. During the summer months, these nutrient-rich waters often attract minke whales, humpback whales, and fin whales, with the occasional sighting of the magnificent blue whale.

As we cruise through this remote stretch of the Arctic Ocean, keep watch along the swells for seabirds gliding above the waves and whales surfacing in the distance. The constantly changing light of the High Arctic often transforms the sea from shimmering silver to deep indigo, creating a striking and ever-changing landscape.

This peaceful day at sea also offers time to relax on board and enjoy informal talks from our expedition team, who will share insights into Arctic wildlife, exploration history, and the unique ecosystems of the polar regions as we continue our journey deeper into the Arctic.

5 Jan Mayen Island2027-08-29

Today we hope to reach one of the most remote and seldom-visited places in the Arctic Ocean — the extraordinary island of Jan Mayen. Few travelers have ever set foot on this isolated volcanic outpost, making a landing here a true highlight of any polar expedition cruise.

Rising dramatically above the sea is Beerenberg, the world’s northernmost active volcano. Its massive glaciers spill down toward the coastline, creating a striking landscape of ice, lava fields, and rugged black-sand shores. The island is also home to thriving seabird colonies, where fulmars, kittiwakes, and other Arctic seabirds fill the cliffs and skies.

If conditions allow, we’ll go ashore to explore this remarkable environment and experience the raw beauty and isolation that define the High Arctic.

6 Fjords of Greenland2027-08-30

A once-in-a-lifetime adventure is yours to have on the largest island in the world, Greenland. At the very top of the world, it’s renowned for its vast tundra, immense glaciers and deep fjords. From an aerial view, the systems link together like the roots of a massive tree and stretching coastlines are dotted with small islands. Landscapes include enormous icebergs and glaciers. You might even see polar bears hunt on the ice.

7 Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland and on to Scoresby Sound2027-08-31

The name “Ittoqqortoormiit” means “Big-House Dwellers” in the Eastern Greenland dialect. Very few visitors make the trek here, as the winters are long, and the sea is frozen for nine months of the year. Ittoqqortoormiit is located at Scoresby Sound, which, with its many side fjords, is the largest fjord complex in the world and the world’s longest fjord system.

Within its borders stands the tallest mountain in the Arctic region, the two-mile-tall Gunnbjorn Mountain. You’ll be warmly welcomed ashore for an open-town experience, where you can explore at your own pace with your Sisters and engage directly with the local community (no shore excursion booking required). This immersive visit is designed to encourage authentic discovery and meaningful interactions throughout the town.

The world’s largest fjord system, Scoresby Sound astonishes with its scale and serenity. Sheer mountains rise above glassy channels, where icebergs the size of cathedrals drift in ever-changing shades of blue. Remote Inuit settlements dot the coastline, offering a glimpse of the life lived in harmony with Arctic rhythms. Zodiac excursions bring you close to calving glaciers or wildlife such as musk oxen and seabirds, while the stillness of this vast fjord imparts a powerful sense of awe and discovery.

8 Crossing the Arctic Circle2027-09-02

Few travel milestones are as memorable as crossing the fabled Arctic Circle. As your ship sails north, you join the ranks of explorers who have ventured into these high latitudes, where the sun lingers on the horizon and ice-choked seas define the landscape. Many mariners celebrate this passage with the lighthearted tradition of becoming a “Blue Nose”, a symbolic order marking your entry into the true High Arctic. Whether you mark it with a toast on deck with your Sisters or simply savor the view, this moment is a true highlight of your polar journey.

9 Dynjandi Waterfall (Isafjordur), Iceland2027-09-03

Imagine standing before the majestic Dynjandi waterfall in Iceland, where the world’s edges seem to touch the sky. As the cascading waters thunder down the rocky cliffside, nature hums an ancient song of exploration just for you. Dynjandi, often seen as the crowning jewel of the Westfjords, is an embodiment of raw beauty and untamed wilderness, inviting you to witness Iceland’s grandeur firsthand.

With the possibility of a Zodiac safari, we won’t just see the falls, we’ll immerse you in them. Navigate the serene waters at the base of Dynjandi, getting an unparalleled view from a genuinely unique angle. Feel the spray of the icy waters and the thrill of adventure as you glide closer, experiencing the symphony of rushing streams that echo the spirit of Viking explorers past.

10 Disembarkation Day2027-09-04

This morning, we arrive in Reykjavík, Iceland, where our unforgettable High Arctic expedition cruise comes to an end. After breakfast, we’ll disembark the ship and transfer to the airport for our flights home.

As we say goodbye, we leave with far more than photographs of glaciers, wildlife, and dramatic Arctic landscapes. We carry home the memories of extraordinary adventures, quiet moments in some of the most remote places on Earth, and the lasting friendships formed while exploring the High Arctic together.

Know Before You Go

Activity Level: 3-Moderate

Level 3 of 7

A High Arctic expedition is unlike a traditional cruise. While this journey does not involve extensive walking or strenuous daily activity, travelers should have average mobility, good balance, and flexibility to participate comfortably in Zodiac excursions and shore landings in remote Arctic environments. The expedition schedule is intentionally flexible and determined by weather, sea ice, wildlife activity, and local conditions. Some days may involve active exploration ashore, while others are spent aboard the ship enjoying scenic navigation, wildlife viewing, enrichment programs, and the comforts of our luxury expedition vessel.

Walking & Standing

Walking distances during shore landings are generally moderate, but the terrain can make relatively short distances more physically demanding. Depending on the landing location, travelers may encounter rocky or black-sand beaches, gravel, tundra, loose stones, wet or slippery surfaces, and uneven natural terrain. There may be no paved walkways, handrails, or traditional docks in remote locations. Travelers should be able to walk independently over uneven ground and remain standing for periods of time while exploring ashore.

Zodiac Excursions & Transfers

Zodiac boats are an essential part of the expedition experience and are used for both scenic cruising and transportation between the ship and remote landing sites. Travelers must be able to step into and out of a Zodiac with assistance from the expedition team. This requires reasonable balance, lower-body strength, and the ability to follow instructions while the Zodiac and ship or shoreline may be moving independently with the water. Some landings may be "wet landings," where travelers step from the Zodiac into shallow water before walking onto shore. Appropriate expedition boots are used when required. Once aboard a Zodiac, guests may remain seated for extended periods while exploring fjords, glaciers, wildlife areas, and remote coastlines. Cold temperatures, wind, sea spray, and the movement of the boat can make these outings more tiring than the distance traveled might suggest.

Climate

Weather in the High Arctic is unpredictable and can change rapidly. Travelers should be prepared for cold temperatures, wind, rain, sea spray, and changing conditions throughout the expedition. Time spent outdoors in cold and windy conditions can require more energy than similar activities in a mild climate.

Pacing

Unlike a traditional land tour, this expedition does not follow a rigid daily sightseeing schedule. Wildlife sightings, sea ice, weather, and local conditions determine when and where exploration takes place. Some days may include a Zodiac excursion, shore landing, or both, while scenic navigation days provide opportunities to relax aboard the ship. The Greenland Sea crossing and other sailing periods naturally create recovery time between more active expedition days. We also begin with two relaxed days in Oslo before flying to Longyearbyen, and the ship becomes our home throughout the expedition, eliminating repeated hotel changes, packing and unpacking, and long overland transfers. Because expedition opportunities depend upon conditions, travelers should also be comfortable with flexibility. Activities may occur earlier, later, or at different times than originally anticipated when the Captain and expedition team identify favorable conditions for wildlife viewing or exploration.
