Activity Level: 4-Busy
This safari does not require extensive walking, but it includes days of travel and wildlife viewing. Travelers should be prepared for early mornings, extended periods seated in safari vehicles, rough and dusty road conditions, limited restroom access, and frequent climbing into and out of high clearance 4x4 vehicles.
Walking & Standing
Walking is generally limited and takes place primarily at lodges, wildlife centers, cultural visits, picnic areas, and designated stops during game drives. Surfaces may include dirt, gravel, grass, uneven pathways, and unpaved ground. Although this tour does not involve sustained walking, travelers must be able to climb into and out of safari vehicles frequently throughout the journey. Safari vehicles sit higher off the ground than standard cars and may require the use of steps and handholds. Travelers should have sufficient mobility, balance, and lower-body strength to board and exit the vehicles safely and repeatedly.
Terrain & Transportation
Specially adapted 4x4 safari vehicles are used for most of the tour. These vehicles are designed for wildlife viewing and travel over unpaved roads, dirt tracks, gravel, rutted surfaces, and uneven terrain. Roads in Kenya and Tanzania can be significantly rougher and bumpier than travelers may be accustomed to, and game drives may involve jolting movement for extended periods. The safari vehicles are not air-conditioned and do not have onboard toilets. Restroom stops are made when facilities and safe stopping locations are available, but access may be limited during game drives and remote transfers.
Full-day game drives may involve up to six hours in a 4x4 vehicle, with a lunch break during the day. Travelers should be comfortable sitting for long periods while traveling over dusty and uneven roads. There are six transfer days involving three hours or more of driving, including stops. One particularly long transfer day includes approximately eight hours of driving. Delays may occur due to road conditions, wildlife, border procedures, weather, or other local circumstances.
Altitude
The maximum elevation reached on this tour is approximately 7,800 feet (2,377 meters). Most travelers experience no significant difficulty at this elevation, but some may notice mild shortness of breath, fatigue, or headaches. Travelers with respiratory, cardiovascular, or other health concerns affected by altitude should consult their physician before traveling.
Early Starts
Several safari days begin very early in order to take advantage of the best wildlife-viewing conditions. Multiple game drives require departures at approximately 6:00 a.m. Travelers should be prepared for early wake-up calls, breakfast before departure or packed meals, and long days that may continue into the late afternoon.
Climate
February is generally warm in Kenya and Tanzania, with strong sun exposure and varying conditions depending on elevation and location. Safari vehicles are not air-conditioned, and travelers may experience heat, dust, wind, and changing temperatures during the day. Morning game drives can feel cool, while midday temperatures may become hot. Lightweight layers, sun protection, hydration, and clothing that can accommodate changing conditions are essential.
Accommodations & Power
Several accommodations provide a more rustic and authentic safari experience. These smaller lodges and tented camps are selected for their exceptional locations within or near national parks and wildlife areas rather than for extensive resort-style amenities. Electricity may not be available continuously or overnight at some properties. Travelers who use a CPAP machine or another powered medical device must ensure that it can operate using rechargeable batteries. Devices should be charged during designated electricity windows, which will be communicated by the Tour Director. Travelers should also be comfortable with the natural sounds, insects, environmental conditions, and simpler amenities associated with remote safari accommodations.
Health & Physical Considerations
This tour is not recommended for travelers with significant back or knee problems because of the repetitive vehicle entry and exit, long periods of sitting, and rough road conditions. The dust, altitude, and lack of air conditioning may also be challenging for travelers with respiratory concerns. Travelers must be able to tolerate repeated jarring and bouncing during game drives, remain seated for extended periods, manage early mornings, and safely board and exit safari vehicles without significant assistance.
Dietary Considerations
Meals are often prepared in shared kitchens, and we cannot guarantee that they will be free from cross-contamination. International travel may also present challenges for travelers with highly restrictive diets, as menus reflect local tastes and alternative dietary needs may not always be widely understood. Group meals frequently feature pre-fixed menus designed to accommodate a range of travelers. While every reasonable effort will be made to address dietary restrictions and food allergies, suitable alternatives may be limited and cannot be guaranteed.
