GENERAL
This is a busy and fast-paced tour designed for travelers who are comfortable with full days of sightseeing, extended walking, and the physical demands of high-altitude destinations. The itinerary includes multiple early morning departures, varied terrain, and several days spent at elevations above 11,000 feet. A good level of stamina, balance, and overall mobility is important to fully enjoy this experience.
Walking and Standing
This is an active tour that includes frequent walking tours lasting more than 3 hours at a time, often covering 3 or more miles at a steady pace. Many sightseeing days involve extended periods of standing, walking through historic sites, and exploring large archaeological areas such as Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo. Daily activities are immersive and can be physically demanding, particularly when combined with altitude.
Terrain, Transport and Accommodations
Travelers should expect a variety of terrain, including uneven stone pathways, steps without handrails, and natural surfaces such as dirt paths and rugged ground. Historic areas and archaeological sites often require careful footing and good mobility. Hotels outside of Lima are typically smaller properties without elevators, requiring guests to navigate approximately 10 to 15 steps to access rooms. This itinerary also includes multiple internal flights, train journeys, and longer touring days, along with several early morning departures tied to transportation schedules.
Altitude Considerations
This journey takes place at high elevations for multiple consecutive days. The highest elevation reached is approximately 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) in Puno, with several days spent around 11,000 feet (3,353 meters). Extended exposure to high altitude may result in symptoms such as headache, fatigue, nausea, or dizziness. Travelers should be in good health and consult their physician prior to travel for guidance on managing altitude. In more severe cases, most hotels are equipped with oxygen to assist guests.
