Activity Level: 3-Moderate
This journey through the Azores and Lisbon offers a wonderful balance of cultural exploration, scenic touring, local experiences, and leisure time. While the tour is not physically demanding, participants should be comfortable with regular walking, occasional uneven terrain, and navigating historic areas where motorcoach access may be limited.
Walking and Standing
Expect daily walking ranging from approximately 1 to 3 miles spread throughout the day, including walking through historic districts, waterfront areas, gardens, viewpoints, and cultural sites. You should also expect periods of standing during sightseeing, museum visits, artisan demonstrations, and cultural experiences.
Terrain and Physical Considerations
The Azores are volcanic islands, and walking surfaces can vary considerably. You may encounter cobblestone streets, uneven sidewalks, stone pathways, natural terrain, and occasional inclines at viewpoints and scenic overlooks. The visit to Algar do Carvão includes descending and ascending a series of steps into a volcanic chimney. While not strenuous, travelers should be comfortable navigating stairways and uneven footing in a naturally damp environment.
Transportation and Travel Days
This itinerary includes several inter-island flights between São Miguel, Faial, and Terceira, as well as a flight from the Azores to Lisbon. Motorcoach touring is generally comfortable, with relatively short travel distances due to the compact size of the islands. Scenic drives are frequently broken up with sightseeing stops and opportunities to explore.
Climate and Weather Conditions
The Azores are known for their mild temperatures and lush landscapes, but weather conditions can change quickly. It is not uncommon to experience sunshine, clouds, wind, and light rain all in the same day. Coastal viewpoints and elevated areas can be breezy, while volcanic and thermal regions may be warm and humid.
