What is Real ID?

The Federal Government enacted this law in 2005, but it goes into effect on May 3, 2023. The Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. It prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:

  • Accessing certain federal facilities (even National Parks and attractions!)
  • Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft (all domestic flights!)
  • Entering nuclear power plants

How Do I Get a Real ID?

Visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to find the documentation required to obtain a REAL ID. At a minimum, you must provide documentation showing: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence, and 5) Lawful Status.

States may impose additional requirements, so check with your state’s driver’s licensing agency website, before visiting them in person, for additional guidance and assistance.

Will I Be Able to Fly within the United States Without a REAL ID?

Travelers who do not present a REAL ID-compliant license or acceptable alternative beginning May 3, 2023, will NOT be permitted through the security checkpoint.

I Have a Passport. Do I Still Need an Additional REAL ID?

No. Your passport will serve in place of a REAL ID. You are ready to go!

I Don’t Have a Passport. What Does REAL ID Mean for Sailing on International Cruises or Crossing the Mexico and Canadian Borders?

REAL ID will not allow you to sail on international cruises, and it will not allow you to cross North American borders. You will still need a passport.
