Activity Level 4

Activity Level:

Busy

This tour offers an incredibly enriching journey through Italy’s iconic destinations, but it’s best suited for travelers who are comfortable with a moderate to active level of physical activity. Here’s what to realistically expect based on our itinerary:

Walking: Many of Italy’s most treasured spots—like Rome’s Vatican Museums, the historic streets of Florence, and Venice’s charming canals—limit motor coach access, meaning we’ll walk to explore these incredible sites up close. Be prepared to cover distances of up to 4 miles in a day over cobblestone streets, which can be uneven and may require careful footing.

Standing: The Vatican tour, which includes the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, will average about five hours without seating or air conditioning. This means participants should be comfortable standing and walking for extended periods in possibly warm conditions.

Stairs and Elevations: Expect to climb several flights of tall stairs, especially at locations like the Vatican and certain hilltop towns, including Assisi and Cortona. These historic sites were built before elevators, so stairs (sometimes without handrails) are often the only access point to some of the most breathtaking views and architecture.

Cobbled Streets and Narrow Sidewalks: In Florence and other cities, the streets are cobbled, which can add a bit of extra challenge to the walking experience, especially for anyone with knee or ankle sensitivities.

To enjoy the full experience, participants should feel comfortable navigating these walking distances, standing for longer durations, and handling stairs and cobblestone surfaces. A reasonable level of fitness will make the experience more enjoyable, as this is a truly immersive tour through Italy’s rich culture, vibrant history, and stunning landscapes.
