Activity Level 4

Activity Level:

Busy

This journey through Southern Italy is best suited for travelers with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable walking several hours a day, handling stairs, and navigating uneven surfaces. While there are plenty of opportunities to rest and recharge, this itinerary includes walking tours, historic sites, boat travel, and time spent in charming but hilly villages and coastal towns. Here’s a realistic breakdown of the activity level involved:

Walking & Standing:

Daily activities include guided walking tours through historic city centers such as Naples, Matera, Lecce, and Alberobello, often on cobblestone streets, sloped walkways, and uneven ground. Sites like Herculaneum, the Sassi di Matera, and the Path of Lemons require walking and standing for extended periods, sometimes without immediate access to seating.

Stairs, Hills & Uneven Terrain:

You’ll encounter stairs and moderate inclines in destinations like Capri, Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Matera, in particular, features steep, narrow alleys and stone staircases in its ancient cave districts. The Path of Lemons hike between Minori and Maiori includes uneven terrain and gentle uphill sections, best suited for those who feel confident walking longer distances on natural paths.

Boat Rides & Coastal Travel:

Travel to and from Capri, Amalfi, and Positano involves boarding small ferries, which may require stepping on and off boats with slight motion due to waves. Weather and sea conditions may affect docking, and passengers should be prepared for balance and stability on moving vessels.

Local Transportation:

Travel throughout the region includes private motorcoach transfers, short scenic drives, and open-air local vehicles (such as the Ape Calessino in Ostuni). While not strenuous, guests should be comfortable getting in and out of different types of vehicles.
