Activity Level:

Moderate

This unforgettable African safari adventure blends remarkable wildlife experiences, dramatic landscapes, and meaningful cultural encounters across Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia. While much of the wildlife viewing takes place from safari vehicles or during guided touring, travelers should be comfortable with several early mornings, extended days of sightseeing, multiple flights within Africa, and some longer overland travel days. Overall, this journey requires a moderate level of mobility and stamina, along with a spirit of adventure and flexibility.

Walking and Standing

This tour includes guided sightseeing in natural areas, wildlife reserves, villages, and cultural sites. Walking distances are generally moderate but may occur on uneven terrain such as sand, dirt paths, gravel roads, and natural viewpoints. At Sossusvlei, guests who wish to reach the famous petrified trees at Deadvlei must walk approximately one mile across deep desert sand. This walk can take 30 to 40 minutes each way and occurs in open conditions without shade, often in warm temperatures. While climbing the towering sand dunes is optional, walking across the sand to reach Deadvlei is required for those who wish to see this iconic landscape. Travelers should be comfortable standing and walking for one to three hours at a time with breaks included.

Terrain and Physical Considerations

Terrain throughout the tour varies widely and includes desert sand, gravel paths, rocky viewpoints, bush terrain, village walkways, and coastal trails. Walking conditions are often uneven and may involve loose sand, dusty ground, or natural surfaces without railings. Many safari activities take place in custom-built open-air safari vehicles. These vehicles require guests to step up and climb in and out using handholds and small ladders or steps. Travelers should have sufficient mobility and balance to safely enter and exit these vehicles multiple times during game drives. Road conditions in Namibia are frequently unpaved gravel, including access roads to Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park. These roads can be dusty, grooved, and bumpy, which may be uncomfortable for travelers who are sensitive to rough rides or prolonged vehicle travel.

Transportation and Travel Days

This itinerary includes five intra-Africa flights and several longer overland transfers. On some days, travelers may spend up to five or six hours in vehicles traveling between destinations, with scenic stops along the way. There are four longer transfer days with extended driving over gravel and unpaved roads. Early morning departures are common throughout the safari portion of the trip, particularly for wildlife viewing. Several game drives depart around 6:00 a.m. in order to experience the most active wildlife hours. During game drives and scenic transfers, guests may spend extended periods seated in safari vehicles while exploring the landscape and searching for wildlife.
