This tour offers a wonderful balance of cultural discovery, scenic travel, and free time to explore at your own pace. Travelers should be comfortable with full days of sightseeing, moderate daily walking, and navigating busy train stations and historic districts. While the itinerary is not physically strenuous, many of Japan's most iconic sites are best explored on foot.
Walking & Standing
Most days include approximately 1 to 3 hours of walking, spread throughout the day while visiting temples, shrines, gardens, historic neighborhoods, museums, markets, and cultural sites. Walking is generally on paved sidewalks, pedestrian streets, and well-maintained pathways, with occasional uneven surfaces in older historic areas. Some attractions include stairs. Travelers wishing to explore the interior of Matsumoto Castle should expect steep, narrow wooden staircases. At Fushimi Inari Shrine, walking beneath the famous torii gates involves gentle inclines and moderate walking on paved pathways. At Koshoji Temple, the meditation and chanting experience is traditionally conducted while seated on the floor. Chairs are available for anyone who is unable to sit on the floor.
Terrain & Transportation
Terrain throughout the tour is generally easy and includes city sidewalks, garden paths, train stations, and historic districts. Some areas feature cobblestones, uneven stone walkways, or gentle slopes. Travel throughout Japan includes a combination of deluxe motor coach, the Hakone Ropeway, sightseeing boat cruise on Lake Ashi, ferry to Miyajima Island, and the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train. Travelers should be comfortable walking through train stations and boarding various forms of transportation.
Pacing
This itinerary includes several full sightseeing days balanced with free afternoons and two full leisure days in Tokyo and Kyoto. Most days are comfortably paced, allowing time to enjoy each destination without feeling rushed.
Climate
Spring is one of the most pleasant times to visit Japan, with generally mild temperatures throughout the journey. However, weather can vary from cool mornings and evenings to warmer afternoons, particularly when traveling between regions. Comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for layering are recommended.
