Activity Level:

Moderate

This Scandinavian journey combines vibrant Nordic cities, scenic rail journeys, ferry crossings, fjord cruising, and guided sightseeing through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Europe. Travelers should be comfortable with regular walking, handling their luggage during transportation changes, and spending several full days exploring cities and natural areas with varying terrain.

Walking and Standing
Expect daily walking ranging from approximately 1 to 3 miles spread throughout the day, often over several hours with breaks. Guided walking tours are included in cities such as Stockholm, Copenhagen, Bergen, and portions of Oslo, where motorcoach access can be limited in historic districts and waterfront areas. Travelers will spend time standing during sightseeing, museum visits, ferry boarding, train stations, and orientation walks.

Terrain and Physical Considerations
Scandinavia’s historic areas often feature uneven cobblestone streets, harbor walkways, inclines, and stairs. In Gamla Stan (Stockholm’s Old Town), Bergen’s Bryggen district, and portions of Copenhagen, walking surfaces can be uneven and occasionally slippery in wet weather. The fjord region of Norway includes mountain landscapes, steep terrain, scenic overlooks, ferry docks, and train platforms that may require additional stability and mobility. While the itinerary itself is not considered strenuous, travelers should be comfortable walking independently on uneven ground and managing moderate inclines.

Transportation and Travel Days
Several days of this tour involve longer travel periods by train, coach, and ferry. The journey from Copenhagen to Aarhus includes both coach and ferry transportation, while the transfer from Denmark to Oslo is a full scenic travel day combining overland coach travel with a ferry crossing. Norway’s fjord region also includes extended but spectacularly scenic driving days through mountainous terrain and narrow winding roads. This itinerary includes scenic canal cruises, fjord cruises, and ferry crossings. Boarding ramps and docks may occasionally be steep or slippery depending on weather and water conditions. Those prone to motion sickness may wish to bring appropriate medication for ferry and fjord cruising days.
