Know Before You Go

Activity Level: 4-Busy

Level 4 of 7

This Australia and New Zealand adventure covers an enormous amount of ground, combining vibrant cities, tropical rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian Outback, alpine landscapes, fjords, wildlife encounters, cruises, and cultural experiences across two countries. Travelers should be prepared for frequent travel days, multiple flights, full sightseeing days, and regular walking on a variety of terrain. While the itinerary is not physically strenuous, the pace is active and the logistics are busy.

Walking and Standing

Expect daily walking ranging from approximately 1 to 3 miles spread throughout the day. Many attractions require extended periods of standing, including wildlife reserves, cultural experiences, harbor areas, cruise embarkations, and sightseeing viewpoints.

Terrain and Physical Considerations

Walking surfaces vary considerably throughout the tour and include city sidewalks, paved pathways, boardwalks, nature trails, docks, gardens, uneven ground, and occasional inclines. In locations such as Mossman Gorge, the Daintree Rainforest, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Milford Sound, and Mt. Cook National Park, travelers may encounter uneven terrain, gravel pathways, natural walking surfaces, and steps.

Transportation and Travel Days

This itinerary includes extensive travel across both Australia and New Zealand. There are four internal flights included, along with one international flight between Australia and New Zealand. Flight schedule changes can occasionally result in adjusted touring schedules, early morning departures, or modified sightseeing arrangements. One travel day includes approximately eight hours or more of motorcoach travel, including sightseeing stops and comfort breaks. While the scenery is spectacular, travelers should be comfortable spending extended periods seated on a coach.

Cruises, Ferries and Water-Based Experiences

Several memorable experiences take place on the water, including Sydney Harbour, the Great Barrier Reef, crocodile habitat cruising, Milford Sound, Lake Wakatipu, and various wildlife and nature excursions. Boarding vessels may occasionally involve ramps, gangways, or steps. Travelers prone to motion sickness may wish to bring appropriate medication, particularly for reef and fjord cruising days.

Climate and Environmental Conditions

This tour spans several dramatically different climate zones. Travelers will experience tropical heat and humidity in northern Australia, dry desert conditions in the Red Centre, temperate coastal climates in southern Australia, and cooler alpine environments in New Zealand.
